Self-de·ter·mi·na·tion

n.

1. Determination of one’s own fate or course of action without compulsion; free will.

2. Freedom of the people of a given area to determine their own political status; independence.

National aspirations must be respected; people may now be dominated and governed only by their own consent. Self determination is not a mere phrase; it is an imperative principle of action.
Woodrow Wilson with his famous self-determination speech on 11 February 1918

The fact is you rarely can reason someone out of a position they did not reason themselves into in the first place.  They will likely be stuck in a will perpetual loop of circular reasoning; employed amongst the list of fallacies available often unknowingly to the unreasonable.

So you don’t support Self-Determination? If this is the case then you view through a really narrow prism and many comments you will make will no doubt reflect this.

You see, ultimately it all comes down to the well being of people and humanity as a whole. What is best for the well being of those resident for many years on a group of small islands in the South Atlantic? What is best for everybody? Self determination means everything in this case and who are you to obfuscate matters and deny them? We are all entitled to our opinions but thank god your hand does not rule, govern, sway over matters such as these, or indeed any. Nor does mine and I do not wish it.

The first principle is that you must not fool yourself and you are the easiest person to fool.
Richard P. Feynman

This issue goes round in circles because those with curious ‘bents’ cannot leave it alone. It is really very simple you know. Leave people alone and let them be. Let the Islanders be who they wish to be, and they wish to be British. I know you find this abhorrent as you find the very notion of a United Britain and associated lands but this is their choice.

The weird bias and convoluted ideologies that muddy the waters of various peoples consciousness’s in this world, and those who would take obscure and weirdly jaunted views based on prejudices, cognitive biases, and warped mental processing lend them to spout such nonsense as to take most of us beyond the stage of bamboozlement on a regular basis.

The idea is to try to give all the information to help others to judge the value of your contribution; not just the information that leads to judgment in one particular direction or another.
Richard P. Feynman

You come to those with reason and rationality; those who really do have a great grasp of their mental faculties (largely clear of perverted narrow reasoning) can immediately see right through the statements you are making and why.

I know many people  can see a world where the well-being of it’s population and their rights are high priority; perhaps the highest.  I’m sorry if you want to bring your own brand of politics into this. To them the matter is simple, to you it has the whiff of conspiracy.

These matters are often made complex by parties tied down by nationalist or perhaps religious; indeed any channeled ideological framework with both eyes looking to the past, even if they do purport to be stepping forward. No wonder they keep falling over. Actually they probably have one leg shorter than the other so they walk in, wait lost in metaphor….

They held a referendum, they got a result. So far there is no reason to suspect ‘foul-play’. Had they chosen to live under the banner of another nation this would also be legitimate though some would have a heavy heart.

Self-determination is also considered a fundamental human right.  In exercising this right, the people of the Falkland Islands have decided to retain their status as an Overseas Territory of the UK.
